The founder of Shiv Sena, Balasaheb Thackeray died on this day in the year 2012. Remembered for the formation on Shiv Sena that is a Hindu, right-wing political party that is active mainly in the state of Maharashtra, Bal Thackeray’s death brought Mumbai to a virtual standstill.

Upon his death, Bal Thackeray’s mortal remains were shifted to Shivaji park, where he was given a state funeral. He is the only other person to have a public cremation, after Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1920. A memorial has also been made at Shivaji Park and the area saw a lot of people thronging the area to pay homage to the late Bal Thackeray.

Uddhav Thackeray, Bal Thackeray’s son Uddhav Thackeray, with wife Rashmi and Aditya paid homege to Balasaheb Thackeray on his fifth death anniversary at Shivaji Park, Dadar, Mumbai. Called 'Balasaheb' and Hindu Hruday Samrat ("Emperor of Hindu Hearts") by his supporters, Bal Thackeray is survived by his son Uddhav and grandson Aditya.

Married to Meena Thackeray, Bal Thackeray had three sons – Bindumadhav, Jaidev and Uddhav. His wife Meena passed away in the year 1995 and is son Bindumadhav died a year later in a car accident. Now his son, Uddhav has taken over the reins of the Shiv Sena. His son Aditya Thackeray is hoping to continue the family dynasty by being active in the youth wing of the party.
