The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to spend Rs 5 crore on appointing a consultant to stop sewage outlay into the Powai Lake and beautify it.

In its annual budget this year, the BMC had once again announced its plans to beautify Powai lake. It has set aside Rs 5.92 crore in this year's budget and the BMC had even started removing water hyacinths from the 220-hectare lake. The plan to illuminate the lake's boundaries were also announced.
This comes on backdrop of reports highlighting the reduction of almost 40% of the lake's area over the decades owing to pollution and natural activities. The quality of the lakewater is highly deteriorated.
As part of the programme, the BMC is now going to appoint a consultant for stopping sewage discharge in the lake.
The entire programme includes landcaping, maintenance and security, parking lots, green spaces, LED lights, developing a sewage treatment plant, musical fountains,
The administration has finalised on a consultant for the project. The proposal for the final appointment will be discussed in the standing committee on Thursday.
