It seems the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is not going to spare anyone who allows mosquito breeding in their premises. Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta has now given one month's time to 10 government agencies to clear mosquito breeding spots on their property, failing which their topmost officers will be prosecuted.

The BMC's Mosquito Abatement Committee, headed by Mehta, discussed this matter in a meeting recently. This is part of the BMC's pre-monsoon preparedness strategy since monsoon sees a spike in dengue, malaria cases.

According to information shared during the meeting, the city has about 69 government or semi-government agencies which have 6483 estates. Several of these agencies have not taken adequate measures to curb mosquito menace. For example, 3680 water tanks here have not been made mosquito-proof in order to make sure there is no breeding.

The meeting was attended by several repsentatives of these agencies. Mehta appealed to them to cooperate with the BMC in this matter, provide them access to property and be vigilant about mosquito menace. Those who fail to do so and allow breeding will be served a notice. And if they don't comply as per rules, the senior most official will be prosecuted.
