The police yesterday raided gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli’s den Dagdi Chawl in Byculla west and arrested his aide with Rs 11 lakh unaccounted cash. Officers are probing if the seized money was part of any extortion bid at the behest of the gangster, who has been home on parole since two days.

He has been granted parole till November 2 to attend to his ailing wife.

In custody
Anil Shivaji Pisal (48) was first detained under section 41(D) of the CrPC, and subsequently, booked under section 124 (possession of property of which no satisfactory account can be given) of the Maharashtra Police Act. Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone III) Pravin Padwal confirmed the arrest to mid-day.

Pisal, who had four serious criminal cases registered against him, had collected the cash from someone, as per information received by the Agripada police on Sunday. After this, senior inspector Ashok Sarambalkar guided inspector R Mahale, sub-inspector Siddhesh Joshte and the detection staff to carry out the raid.

Investigation on
“Pisal could not give a satisfactory answer as to how he got such a large amount, considering he is a vegetable vendor,” said Sarambalkar, adding that Pisal claimed the money was from his vegetable and money-lending businesses.

“We are not buying Pisal’s claims and are investigating the matter,” said Sarambalkar.
