A teenager who had come to his uncle’s house in Mumbai last week, hanged himself yesterday. According to the police, he had failed in his Std XI exams and may have taken the drastic step as a result of that.

The deceased, Sunny Harishankar Sharma (19), had come to stay with his maternal uncle (mama), at Hanuman chawl, Deendayal Upadhyay Nagar in MIDC, Andheri. His maternal aunt (maasi) also stays in the same chawl in another room, and owns another smaller room opposite her house.

Sunny was from Varanasi, UP, and had come to his uncle’s house on Friday. He would sleep in the third smaller room with all his cousins. Around 6.30 am yesterday, his uncle and cousins went to work at a local salon they own. His maternal aunt, Geeta, and her son, Dharmendra, were the only ones left behind, in their own house.

In the opposite room, around 8 am, Sunny swung a nylon rope across a rod near the ceiling and hanged himself. At around 9 am, Dharmendra, entered this room to find Sunny hanging. Sunny was rushed to Cooper Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. His post-mortem was ongoing at the time of filing this report. Police said he may have taken the drastic step after failing his Std XI exams.

Senior Police Inspector Rajaram Bhanudas Mandage from MIDC police station said, “Sunny had come to his uncle’s place on Friday. He was from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The motive behind the suicide is that he had failed his Std XI exams. No complaint has been registered.”
