Good news, motorists! The plan to construct three flyovers and an underpass to ease traffic congestion on Chheda Nagar junction at Eastern Express Highway in Ghatkopar has finally picked up pace with Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) inviting tenders for the project. The project had been in the pipeline for over five years.

This junction has over the years become a major traffic bottleneck, where traffic police have to deploy additional staff at peak hours to manage the heavy flow. "The plan has been designed to decongest the Chheda Nagar junction, where motorists face traffic snarls during morning and evening peak hours," said an MMRDA engineer.

The Rs 250-crore project was part of MMRDA’s 2015-16 financial budget and the planning for the project began over five years ago when the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road and Eastern Freeway were being constructed. With the opening of both the link road and the freeway the traffic flow has increased in the area. Around 2.5 lakh vehicles pass the junction every day.
"The volume of traffic increased at Chheda Nagar junction soon after the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road and Eastern Freeway were operational. Since it is a major bottleneck, construction of the three flyovers and the underpass would help a lot in solving traffic issues. Currently, we manage traffic in the evening using live traffic updates from Google Maps," said Senior Police Inspector (Traffic), Ashoke Dabhade from Chembur traffic police division.
The length of the flyover from Eastern Express Highway to Chheda Nagar junction will be 0.68 km, Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road to Eastern Express Highway 1.23 km and Chheda Nagar junction to Santacruz-Chembur Link Road 0.63 km.
