Wholesale fruit traders at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi have been upset with private importers who are selling their products with the help of a dedicated team. There has been an increase in supply of fruits coming from other countries, after Russia imposed ban on food imports from USA, Canada, Australia and the European Union.

However, the tactics used by these private importers to sell their fruits have not gone down too well with the traders at the market. “We are not stopping them from selling their stock, we are only against their method of assigning a team for selling it. This is not the way business is conducted at APMC,” said Deepak Jaiswal, a fruit trader and owner of Jaiswal International fruit block.
APMC officials have now restricted importers from using a dedicated marketing team to trade in the market. An official said they do not allow any such methods in the wholesale market.
Fruit traders revealed that the supply of fruits, especially apples from Washington, has been increasing. In order to avoid stocks piling up, the importers are trying hard to sell the produce.
“Supply of fruits like apples, pears, grapes and plums is expected to increase in the next couple of months as a part of the international supply, which was supposed to go to Russia, is now being diverted to countries like India,” informed Ravilal Mehta, a fruit dealer.
Traders expect a 30-40% rise in fruit supplies in the next few days itself. The traders said that selling imported apples will take time as they already have apples coming from Kinnaur in abundance.
