ACB unearths assets worth Rs 3.68 Cr of booked excise officer

Thane: The Anti-Corruption Bureau has stumbled upon alleged ill-gotten assets worth Rs 3.68 crore during a search at the house of an Excise inspector, who was booked in a molestation case, here.


Rajendra Shirsat (47), inspector with the C-1 division of the state Excise department, was arrested last week for allegedly giving a bribe of Rs 15 lakh to his female colleague for withdrawing a complaint of molestation lodged against him.


During the search carried out recently at Shirsat's house, the ACB found Rs 8,92,320 in cash, besides documents showing two flats in his wife's name at Airoli (Navi Mumbai) valued at Rs 1,44,43,180, apart from one saloon and two shops valued at Rs 1,60,72,703.


ACB also found (documents of) farm land located at Pimpalgaon, Parli Vaijnath, valued at Rs 8,70,000, plots valued at Rs 53,000, FDs to the tune of Rs 43,35,000 in a private bank besides deposits in different banks to the tune of Rs 83,984, ACB DYSP Sanjay Mohite said in a press release today.

Shirsat was caught on Monday last week when he was allegedly giving the money to the complainant on the Eastern Express Highway at Vikhroli in suburban Mumbai.

The woman, who worked in the same department, had earlier filed a police complaint of molestation against Shirsat under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code.

He had allegedly asked her not to pursue the complaint and offered Rs 50 lakhs besides giving an assurance to help her in getting a transfer.

The ACB has already registered a case under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act against the accused with the Shri Nagar police station in the city.
