In 2014, around 339 cases were registered under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. In 2015, the figure rose to 448. “Within a span of five years (From 2011-2012 to 2015-2016) the reporting of rape cases has increased by 289 per cent, while molestation cases rose by 287 per cent.
The state government and the police department should take steps towards ensuring safety of women and children,” said Nitai Mehta, founder and managing trustee of Praja.
“The awareness in people has increased; things like social media are also creating more awareness. We have always asked our staff to register the offence if somebody comes to the police station,” said former commissioner of police, Satyapal Singh.
“Crime has not increased but the registration of offences has. Though the figures are true, they don’t give a clear picture. We don’t turn away complainants,” said Ashok Dudhe, spokesperson, Mumbai police.
