Nineteen down, five more to go. Then, the city will be completely free of Covid-19 containment zones.

According to the BMC’s data, out of the total 24 wards in the city, only five have slums that are in containment. Currently, 13 slums are in containment zones (CZ), including four in K East ward comprising Andheri, Jogeshwari and Vile Parle; three in M East ward (Govandi) and S ward (Bhandup and Powai); two each in R South ward (Kandivli) and H West ward (Bandra and Khar).

Since the novel Coronavirus outbreak in the city in March last year, the city sealed a total of 2,782 slums to contain the spread in these closely packed areas. A civic official, not willing to be named, said, “The case load is under check and there are no issues regarding the slums in the city, as many drives are being conducted to ensure people there are vaccinated.”

Data on sealed residential buildings in the city shows that 12 wards still are not completely free of Covid-19. A total of 68 buildings in these wards are under restriction. The highest number of sealed buildings are in K West ward (Andheri, Vile Parle and Jogeshwari) with 28, followed by D Ward (Malabar Hill, Peddar Road and Girgaum) with 11. The rest of the 10 wards have sealed buildings in single digits.

Though the Covid-19 numbers are in control, the civic body is consistently appealing to the citizens to not let their guards down. It has asked people to follow Covid-19-appropriate behaviour, like wearing a mask in public places, maintaining a safe physical distance and using hand soap or sanitiser.
