In a special drive carried out across the state in the past three days the department found 256 establishments guilty of overcharging, smudging the MRP, not giving mandatory declarations (text displayed on products), not giving declarations in legible size and of other violations. In Mumbai around 49 establishments were penalised and most of them are from prominent malls in different parts of the city.
Special Inspector General of Police, and Controller, Legal Metrology department, Amitabh Gupta said, after his office received multiple complaints pertaining to overcharging of packaged drinking water and cold drinks, a state-wide crackdown was planned and in a special campaign in the past three days, 1062 establishments across the state were inspected at malls, cinema halls, railway stations, bus stands and hotels.
Of this, 256 establishments, which include manufacturers and packers as well, were found guilty. “This included 208 inspections in various establishments in Mumbai, of which 49 were found guilty of violating rules and norms. We inspected almost all the malls in the city and most of these establishments are from the malls and cinema halls,” Gupta told mid-day.
The guilty establishments were charged under relevant sections of Legal Metrology Act. “If those guilty admit to the charges levelled against them, then they will be penalised as per rules but no case will be taken against them. But if they don’t admit their wrong doing, then they will be charge sheeted as per the Legal Metrology Act,” Gupta said.
