Adinath did not respond when attempts were made to contact him during a shift change

On Monday morning, the lifeless body of Adinath Patil, a 24-year-old postgraduate medical student studying at KEM hospital, was discovered in the restroom of TB hospital, Sewree. Adinath was on duty in KEM hospital’s ward, which is situated within the TB hospital premises, and he was taking a break in the restroom.

However, during a shift change, when attempts were made to contact him, he did not respond. Concerned, a ward boy went to check on him and found him unconscious in the restroom. According to the family’s statement, he was struggling to cope with the workload at the hospital.
Dr Adinath Patil was a first-year MD (medicine) student and was appointed as the resident medical officer. “He came to the premises on Sunday night and joined duty. He was supposed to be relieved on Monday morning,” said an official from RAK Marg police station. “On Monday morning, when doctors who were supposed to relieve him from his duties couldn’t find him at the ward, they tried calling him, but he didn’t answer,” the official added.

Meanwhile, around 8.30 am, a ward boy went to the doctor’s restroom located on the 2nd floor.
He noticed that the door was slightly open, so he went inside and found Patil unresponsive. He was brought to the ward, and initial treatment was given, but there was no pulse. Finally, doctors shifted him to KEM hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival at 9.16 am. An empty syringe was found near the bed where Patil was found dead, and the initial investigation suggests that he administered a drug to himself through an injection.
Patil hailed from Jalgaon district and had completed his MBBS from Seth GS Medical College (attached to KEM hospital). After graduating, he appeared for NEET and secured a spot at GS Medical College for MD in medicine in 2022. “He was unhappy with the workload he had and wanted to change college.
He had expressed his thoughts to me and our parents,” said Ajinkya Patil, Adinath’s younger brother, who is an MBBS student at GS Medical College. Adinath’s parents are doctors by profession and have their practice in Jalgaon.
“As per the information, we have filed an accidental death report (ADR) as there is no suicide note.
We have taken a statement from his younger brother,” said Mahadeo Nimbalkar, Senior Inspector of RAK Marg police station. “As of now, there is no suspicion of foul play in the incident. Prima facie, it appears that he administered some medicine to himself,” he added. “The post-mortem will reveal more about the cause of death,” he said.
KEM hospital’s Dean, Dr Sangeeta Ravat, told mid-day that it is very unlikely that the incident was due to work pressures. “He was a very hardworking student, and it is unfortunate that this has happened. I have been in touch with his brother.”
