This year’s largest full moon will light up the sky tonight, however, it won’t be a supermoon. This month’s full moon is called the ‘Pink Moon’, a term derived from the Farmer’s Almanac that names every month’s full moon.

Arvind Paranjpye, director, Nehru Planetarium, said, “The moon orbits around the earth. It comes nearer and goes farther away. When it is at the closest to earth, it appears larger and brighter; this is inverse for when it is farther away from the earth. If the closeness of the moon and the phase of the moon coincide — basically when it is closest and it is also a full moon — it will be called supermoon.”
Paranjpye said the term supermoon has caught on in recent years. April’s full moon won’t meet the “conditions of a supermoon. On Monday night, the moon will appear to be only 1 per cent bigger than usually, whereas a supermoon looks much bigger. However, this will be the closest full moon of 2021 — also called a Pink Full Moon.”
