Animal lover Vishya Kumtekar (40) is upset with Dr Yuvraj Kagnikar, the manager of the Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) hospital in Parel. Kagnikar, she says, abandonedu00a0 the stray kitten she had entrusted to his care, at a random spot in Goregaon.
Kumtekar, a customer representative with a shipping firm in Mahalaxmi, explained, "Kagnikar says the SPCA abandoned the defenseless animal, as the expenses of keeping her at the centre were too high. This, when I paid Rs 500 for her treatment. I tried to locate the kitten with the help of the SPCA driver who abandoned her in Goregaon, but we were unable to trace her," said Kumtekar.
Chembur-resident Praveen Sumitra (32) has a similar complaint to make about the SPCA. "I admitted a stray cat at the centre, and later, when I expressed a desire to adopt her, the manager told me that he would not hand the cat over to me. I told him that the injured cat had delivered babies in my building who needed their mother, but Kagnikar refused to give her to me," Sumitra said.
Kagnikar, however, refuted the allegations. "Both Sumitra as well as Kumtekar wanted free medical attention for the cats they brought here. Sumitra has never expressed a desire to adopt the cat, as he is now claiming. We made many calls to Kumtekar, asking her if she would adopt the cat, and she did not respond. We are short of space and have no choice, but to release strays cats eventually."
Kagnikar added that pet owners often tried to pass off their pets as strays to get them treated for free at the SPCA hospital.
"Such owners place a heavy burden on our finances, as we also need funds to treat strays that are in dire need of medical attention," he said.
