An offence has been registered against six persons for allegedly assaulting a group of police officers and obstructing the efforts of a state-owned power company to install an electricity meter in Thane.

According to an official statement, the offense came to light, following a complaint filed by a police constable on Friday.

The Thane police registered a case under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to assault or the use of force to hinder a public servant in the execution of their duty, along with other relevant legal provisions.

The incident occurred in the Bhayandarpada area in Thane.

The backdrop of this incident was a court directive resulting from a writ petition, compelling officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to accompany a police team for the installation of an electricity meter at a charitable trust's property.

As the MSEDCL team reached the spot along with the police and was in the process of meter installation, a group of approximately 10 to 15 individuals gathered at the spot.

According to the official, the group of people started verbally abusing them.

"When the police sought to prevent their interference, the accused allegedly resorted to physical altercation and prevented the MSEDCL representatives from completing the meter installation," the police official added.

No arrests have been made in connection with this incident thus far.

Meanwhile, in another incident in Thane, the police have taken into custody three more persons over a financial crime that involved breaching the system of a payment gateway service provider and siphoning off Rs 25 crore, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to seven, an official said on Friday.
