An official said a woman's body with wound marks was found near a hillside in Palghar district on Wednesday. A report in the PTI stated that the locals had allegedly discovered the body.

Per the news agency report, officials said that the body of the woman in Palghar was found near Pelhar police station on Tuesday and that the unidentified woman is aged 35-40.

The report further stated that the body was sent to a government hospital for post-mortem, and a case was filed under IPC section 302 (murder). The official told the news agency that further probe is underway.

Meanwhile, in another incident from Mumbai's Goregaon suburb, a man allegedly murdered a woman, wrapped her body in a plastic bag, turned on the fan and cooler, and fled. The stench of the decomposing body revealed the murder. When the neighbours broke the house's lock and entered, they found the body wrapped in a plastic bag.

A mid-day report stated that the deceased woman was identified as Dibya Toppo, 29, and the accused who fled was Jairam Lakada, 39. They lived in a rented apartment at Ashok Nagar, Kama Estate, Hub Mall, Western Express Highway, Goregaon East.

The report quoted the officials saying that they have not ascertained whether the duo was a married couple or live-in partners and added that they had posed as husband and wife to lease the home and that both worked as labourers at the Nesco Centre.

After reviewing the Aadhaar card included in the rent agreement, it was revealed that the couple was from Odisha. Dibya Toppo, the deceased woman, was the daughter of John Toppo, who lived in the hamlet Surulata Sunjore, district Sundargarh, Orissa. Jairam, the suspect, came from the same district, the mid-day report stated.

Sameer Bataviya, the owner of the apartment, told mid-day that Jairam had paid the rent on May 22 and that he has not since seen him. Bataviya, who runs a rubber moulding unit, below the home said that his factory is open from dawn till 9 pm. He said that Jairam and the deceased returned home only after the factory was closed.

Bataviya stated that there had been a horrible stench emanating from the residence for several days, and they initially feared a dead rat, but the odour worsened. He said when the stink got overwhelming and the home remained shut, they became suspicious and smashed the lock while taking a video in the presence of neighbours. He said they alerted cops after discovering the decaying body of the woman wrapped in a plastic bag.

During the inquiry, it was discovered that Dibya was strangled using a nylon rope wrapped around her neck. The fan, cooler, and light were turned on. Attempts to contact Jairam via his cell phone were unsuccessful since his phone was turned off. The police conducted a Panchanama, sent the body for autopsy, filed a murder charge, and launched an investigation, according to the officer.
