Mumbai: Student kills father, grandfather, then kills self

Milind and Suresh Mangle

A second year BCom student, Shardul Milind Mangale, brutally killed his 55-year-old father and grandfather. He later jumped to his death from the sixth floor of his Mulund residence on Saturday morning. Police sources said that the accused and deceased, Shardul, was in a psychiatric centre for over a year, undergoing treatment for a mental illness.

The Mangale family—Shardul’s father Milind and his grandfather Suresh—lived at Vasant Oscar Society in Mulund West. Police sources said Shardul’s parents had separated seven years ago, and he had been living with his father and grandfather.

The entire incident occurred in front of Anand Kamble, who was the caretaker of Shardul’s grandfather, Suresh, who was bedridden at home. In a  statement to the police, he said,  “On Saturday morning, at 8.30 am, Shardul, his father Milind and his grandfather were at home. Milind scolded Shardul and told him to study. As Milind worked on his laptop, Shardul took a sharp knife from the kitchen and stabbed him on the neck from behind. Later, as Milind tried to escape, Shardul stabbed his father in the stomach five times and threw him on the staircase. After killing his father, Shardul went to the bedroom and stabbed his grandfather. Shardul also tried to kill me, but I locked myself in the bathroom. Shardul then jumped from the balcony of the sixth floor.”

The neighbours informed the police about the incident and rushed both Milind and Suresh to MT Agrawal Hospital at Mulund, where both were declared dead. Shardul died on the spot.

Speaking with mid-day, DCP (Zone 7) Prashant Kadam, said, “The mother told us that Shardul had not been taking medicine for the last one-and-a-half-months due to which he had panic attacks. We have registered an FIR in this matter and we are investigating. We have not found a motive behind the murder and suicide.”

Shardul’s relatives told mid-day, “After separation, Shardul lived with his mother for a bit. But he used to beat her and her parents. Due to this reason, Milind took him home to Mulund.  It’s a shocking turn of events.”
