Mumbai Police arrests 50 people for matka gambling

Mumbai Police on Wednesday said that its crime branch busted a matka gambling den and arrested 50 people in connection with the matter, reported the PTI.


According to the police, Mumbai Police's crime branch raided the matka gambling den near a bar in central Mumbai.


matka gambling or satta is a lottery game based on random number selection and betting.


"On Tuesday, we received information that satta was underway in a shed near a bar in Bhoiwada area, A senior crime branch officer reached the spot. He locked the shed from outside, and called for reinforcement," the police official said, reported the news agency.

A few people fled the spot, but police nabbed two managers, as many cashiers, 16 writers, and 30 customers, and recovered Rs 3.76 lakh and other materials.

A case has been registered at Bhoiwada Police Station and further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, a total of 45 persons were apprehended and nearly Rs 6.45 lakh was seized after the police raided a gambling den in Maharashtra's Thane city, an official said on Wednesday, as per the PTI.

The illegal activity was going on inside a club in the city's Kopri area on Tuesday night, the official said.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shivraj Patil, the crime branch carried out the crackdown and found that 43 persons were playing 'teen patti' inside the club.

The 43 gamblers and club manager Sandeep Patil and owner Babu Nadar were apprehended under the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act. The police also recovered Rs 6,43,890 from there, he added.

In an another matter, the Mumbai police have issued an order banning possession of arms, swords, sticks or any article that can be used to cause physical harm, and also prohibited people from giving harangues till February 9, an official said on Wednesday, reported the PTI.

The prohibitory order was issued on Tuesday by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Police Act.

As per the order, carrying of arms, cudgels, swords, spears, bludgeons, unlicenced guns, knives, sticks or lathis is banned in the jurisdiction of Mumbai police commissionerate limits.

Besides banning weapons, the order also prohibits people from carrying any corrosive substance or explosives, carrying stones, missiles, instruments or means of casting or impelling missiles are also banned, the order stated.

"The exhibition of persons or corpses of figures of effigies, public utterance of cries, singing of songs, playing of music is also prohibited during the period," it said, the news agency reported.
