Women’s safety is still a major concern for the Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) police commissionerate, as two women—one newly married and one a senior citizen—were murdered on Saturday.

In the first incident, the naked body of a 24-year-old newly married woman was found soaked in blood in Virar on Saturday. The wrists of the deceased were found slit. The woman, [identified as] Priya [Kamble], got married to Amar Kamble on October 21 and had been staying with him. The in-charge of Virar police, Suresh Varade told mid-day that the body has been sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem to ascertain if it is a murder or a suicide. “The deceased’s mother Ashwini Lotekar has submitted a complaint alleging that Priya has been murdered. We have registered a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown person,” Varade told mid-day. Her husband Amar is a contractual BEST bus driver deployed in Bandra. He told the police that he had gone to work on Friday night and when he reached home on Saturday morning, he found his wife dead.
In yet another case, an octogenarian was found murdered in Nalasopara East on Saturday afternoon. The police have registered a murder case against unknown persons. “The body of an 80-year-old woman has been recovered from her house. There is a wound on her head, and it seems that she was hit by a blunt object,” said zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Kumar Patil. The deceased, who has been identified as Wali Shivshankar, lived alone in her house. “We have registered a case under section 302 based on the complaint of her daughter Kudi,” said Patil. Ganesh Vanjara, the grandson of the elderly woman, told mid-day that around 15 days ago, some unknown masked men had tried to strangulate her, but the police didn’t take it seriously. Further investigations are on.
