A Delhi based lawyer was held by the Bangur Nagar Police in Mumbai who allegedly gained notoriety for using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to edit and morph pornographic videos featuring actresses, the police said.

According to the police, the suspect, a 30-year-old man, allegedly demanded sexual favors from the victims under the threat of viral dissemination of these manipulated videos across social media platforms.

The matter was reported to the police by an actress, who was distressed by the morphed pornographic content, an official said.

She lodged a complaint with Bangur Nagar Police station that began to investigate the matter, he said.

The victim had found that her private photos were allegedly widely circulated on social media platforms after being morphed using AI technology. She also received threatening messages, and in January, she found that videos featuring her had gone viral on Telegram, the police sources said.

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the police initiated an investigation under the guidance of Assistant Commissioner Renuka Bagde and a team, led by Senior Inspector Pramod Tavde, worked on the case, the police said.

During the investigation, crucial information emerged indicating that the videos were morphed using advanced AI technology, sources added.

The police traced the origin of the viral content to Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. Further investigation revealed that the individual behind the threatening messages was a lawyer practicing in the Delhi High Court, an official said.

The police summoned him for questioning and upon checking his social media accounts, the officials allegedly found evidence of the messages. Following extensive questioning, the suspect confessed to orchestrating the dissemination of the morphed videos, he added.

"It was revealed that he had been allegedly stalking the actress online. The police confiscated a mobile phone from the accused, uncovering two contacts on Telegram through which he distributed videos of actresses," said an official.

The police said that the suspect was arrested and presented before a Mumbai court, where he was remanded to judicial custody.
