RTI activist Raju Vishwakarma was also furious at the senior MBMC employee, who was shot at last month by the men hired by his two subordinates, Mira Bhayandar police said on Friday. Two junior engineers of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) had given a supari of Rs 20 lakh to kill civic body’s Executive Engineer Deepak Khambit, but he survived.

The juniors — Yashwant Deshmukh and Shree Krishna Mohite — had hired the contract killers through Vishwakarma. Police said Vishwakarma had beef with the Khambit, because he had cancelled his contract with the civic body to supply food to Covid-19 centres over poor quality of the food, the police added.

Police also found that Mohite and Deshmukh used to inform Vishwakarma about the alleged illegal works going on under the MBMC and would ask him to file complaints against any irregularities. In return, Vishwakarma received Rs 65,000 every month from the duo. Deshmukh and Mohite had assured Vishwakarma of all possible help to get Khambit out of their way, including financial help, said an officer.
