A 30-year-old man has been arrested from suburban Andheri for allegedly killing his wife over suspicion of having an extra-marital affair, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday, following which the accused, Naran Chowdhary, was arrested by the MIDC police, an official said.

After a heated argument with his wife, the accused strangulated her in front of their children at their residence in Hanzar Nagar locality in Andheri (West). After that, he went to his place of work, believing that she has only fallen unconscious, he said.

"Before strangulating his wife, Chowdhary had attacked her, due to which she had collapsed. Thereafter, he went to his place of work. After some time, he called his wife, but as there was no response, he contacted her elder sister and asked her to visit the place," the official said.

When she reached their residence, she found her sister lying motionless on the floor. She immediately alerted the neighbours and also informed the police, he added.

The police rushed Chowdhary's wife to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead, the official said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone X) Mahesh Reddy said, "We have arrested Chowdhary under IPC section 302 (murder). He was working at a stationary shop."
