The Ghatkopar police have arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly cheating a woman posing as an Intelligence Bureau officer. He had befriended the 32-year-old complainant over a dating app and allegedly stole her gold jewellery. The police said the accused, a Panvel resident, is married and might have duped more women, though his family says he suffers from a psychological disorder and is under medication.

In her complaint, the woman had alleged that she was friends with a man named Saurabh Thakur, who had identified himself as an IB officer. Both had met a couple of times. He once visited her home and stole gold ornaments worth Rs 17.5 lakh, she alleged.
The police said they took the help of the complainant to honey-trap Thakur after registering an FIR under section 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code. “We tracked him through social media and kept an eye on his movements. On Tuesday evening, we arrested him near a Ghatkopar bus depot,” said an officer from Ghatkopar police station.
In police custody, Thakur apparently said that he had an MBBS degree and done PhD on pancreatic cancer. His family, however, insisted that Thakur is afflicted with a psychological disorder and is being treated for it.
“He used a dating app to befriend women and liked to be with them for brief periods. In this case, the accused did not commit any sexual assault,” said another officer.
DCP (Zone 7) Prashant Kadam added, “We are verifying all the claims made by the family of the accused. It has also been revealed that he used to chat with multiple women. We are trying to ascertain if there are more victims.” Apart from theft charges, the cops have also added section 170 (personating a public servant) to the case. They have seized a car Thakur, who will be presented in a court on Wednesday.
