A 75-year-old doctor from Goregaon East approached the Vanrai Police on Wednesday after he allegedly received an extortion letter from a Maoist group. Through the letter, delivered to him at his clinic by a woman, the group has threatened to kill him and his son if he did not give them Rs 50 lakh.

According to police sources, the doctor was in his clinic on Wednesday when a woman in a burqa approached him and handed over the letter. As there were a number of patients at the clinic, he did not open the letter there, but read it after reaching home. The letter starts with the words ‘Lal Salaam’ and threatens to kill him and his son if he fails to pay the sum.

The letter says, “We will slit your son’s throat and then yours if Rs 50 lakh is not given immediately.” The doctor got so scared that he approached the Vanrai police station and registered a complaint. The person who wrote the letter described himself as the commander of the Maoist group because that was what written at the end of the text.

“We have registered a case under various sections of IPC and are investigating the matter. A number of CCTVs from the nearby locality have been inspected and a woman is spotted entering the doctor’s clinic,” a police officer. “The Crime Branch is also probing the case and they have detained a number of suspects, who are being interrogated,” said another officer.
