Mumbai Police's crime branch officials on Tuesday foiled an attempt to attack a man with a knife during a robbery in Andheri area of Mumbai and nabbed a knife wielding man red handed. Two officials sustained injuries in the incident, the police said on Wednesday.

According to the police, a team of officials from Mumbai Crime Branch unit 10 were returning back from an investigation at around 10 pm on Tuesday. They witnessed a commotion at Nagardas Road in Andheri area.

The police said that the team decided to stop by and check. They saw a man was being held by two people at knife point. The police officials immediately decided to rescue the man from the duo. The victim was later identified as Devidas Sonar, 30.

Upon questioning, he told the police that while he was walking, the duo first approached him and pulled out a knife. They asked him to hand over the money he had and even threatened to harm him with the knife, the police said.

Fearing for his safety, the victim complied with their demands and surrendered his wallet to them which had Rs 500. The robbery was executed with the use of a sharp knife, which heightened the victim's fear, the police said.

The team of police officials rushed to nab the suspects but during the process one of them escaped while the officials from crime branch were successful in nabbing the other who even allegedly tried to attack the police officials, the police said.

"When two officials from the unit 10 of the Mumbai Crime Branch rushed to nab the suspects, one of them fled away, while the other attempted to attack the officials. During the process, two police officials sustained injuries in the incident but they were successful in nabbing the culprit. One of the two suspects was nabbed from the crime scene," an official said.

The police said that the suspect was later placed under arrest and was identified as Saif Shaikh, 24.

"He has been booked under relevant sections of the IPC and further investigations were underway," the official further said.
