The Santacruz police have nabbed two burglars, who used to rob the houses in the Mumbai suburban area, and had later travelled to Ajmer to give the bounty as alms.

The robbers, identified as Ejaz Sayyed and Ahmed Shakil Khan, are residents of Malwani in Malad west. They were wanted for housebreaking in Santacruz a year ago. While Ahmed is a rickshaw driver, Ejaz is an expert lock breaker.

According to police sources, the duo had broken the lock of a closed house in the Santacruz area a year back and escaped with a TV, gold and silver ornaments worth lakhs.

While investigating the case, PSI Yogesh Pawar attached to the Santacruz police along with his team, scanned the CCTV of the locality and spotted the duo entering the locality in one of the footages. Police officers from Santacruz police station were on the lookout for the duo for months when they learned that the two had returned from Ajmer recently and were staying in Malwani.

The accused used to come to Bandra at night to get intoxicated and checked houses to loot during their return.

“Once we identified them, we laid a trap and arrested the duo from Malvani a couple of days back,” said Pawar.

Addicted to alcohol, the duo confessed to the police that they used to rob houses for money, however, when they felt guilty about the crime they used to go to Ajmer to donate the money.

“We have recovered the stolen TV from the house of the accused Ahmed. We have arrested the duo for housebreaking and theft and they were produced before the court last week when the court remanded them to police custody,” the police officer said.

During the inquiry, it has been revealed the accused have committed similar crimes in Malvani and another area of the Mumbai suburban area and they are habitual criminals, said PSI Yogesh Pawar.
