Cops said the businessman’s son had got married recently and he was on his way to the bank to keep all the jewellery in the locker. However, he got out of the autorickshaw without collecting the bag.
The businessman, Mahesh Shah, a resident of Vallabh Nagar at Ghatkopar East, runs a travel agency.
Sub-inspector Rahul Waghmare of Pant Nagar police station said, “On Monday, at around 1 pm Shah took an autorickshaw outside his residence to go to the bank. While getting out of the auto, Shah forgot to collect his bag that contained 25 tolas of gold jewellery. After realising what had happened, Shah immediately rushed to the police station to file a complaint.”
An officer said that the auto driver did not inform the police after finding the bag and, instead, kept the jewellery at his residence.
“Senior inspector Ravidatta Sawant formed a team to find the missing bag. We checked CCTV footage and found one autorickshaw with a Tirupati Balaji symbol on the front of the mirror. The number captured was blurry, hence we cross-checked it with the challan. We found that it was auto driver Mohan Pal from the Parkside area and rushed to his house. When questioned, he initially denied knowing about the bag, but later confessed to having kept it at home. As nothing was missing from the bag, we let him off with a warning,” said Waghmare.
