The anti-corruption bureau (ACB), Mumbai, on Monday, arrested a 33-year-old police sub-inspector (PSI) Bharat Mundhe for trying to settle down a sensitive rape case. Mundhe, attached to NM Joshi Marg police station, was arrested red-handed with Rs 7 lakh cash. Sources told mid-day that the PSI Mundhe had been trying to dilute the rape case and had been threatening the relative of the accused to cough up Rs 37 lakh else he will make him co-accused in the case.

The rape accused is the maternal uncle of the victim, who had named others in the case, registered almost a fortnight ago at NM Joshi Marg police station.

In a bid to justify his bribe, Mundhe reportedly said he needs R5 lakh for himself, R2 lakh for the senior inspector and Rs 30 lakh for the rape victim to suppress the matter.

The relative, then, approached the ACB, Mumbai and narrated his ordeal. After due confirmation of the monetary demand, the ACB sleuths laid a trap and arrested Mundhe red-handed with R7 lakh cash. He has been booked under sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Further investigations are underway.

His arrest punctures a big hole in the tall claims of Mumbai police who have recently made a fanfare of Nirbhaya Squad to instill confidence among city women to be ‘fearless’.
