A 61-year-old man died of snakebite in Malad in Mumbai, a police official said on Saturday, reported the PTI.

According to the PTI, the incident took place on Friday afternoon and the deceased has been identified as Zafar Hussain, a Pune resident who had come to his kin's home in Raheja locality in Malad East for shopping for the wedding of his son, the Dindoshi police station official said.

"When he went into the bathroom, he was bitten by a cobra, which probably came in from the window. He rushed out and told his relatives, who took him to a nearby hospital where died during treatment," the official said, as per the PTI.

A snake rescuer removed the reptile, the official said, adding that an accidental death report has been registered.

Meanwhile, in an another incident in August, a nine-year-old boy died after being bitten by a snake in Thane district, police said, reported the PTI.

The boy was playing outside his house at Saralgaon in Murbad area when he suffered the snake bite, an official from Murbad police station had told the PTI.

The boy was rushed to the public health centre in Saralgaon where doctors declared him brought dead, the official said, as per the PTI.

Local police sent the body to a government hospital for postmortem and registered a case of accidental death, he added.

In an another incident in May, two children have lost their lives as a result of snakebites in separate incidents in Thane and Palghar districts, an official had earlier said.

A 15-year-old boy from Kalyan taluka in Thane succumbed to a snakebite in August, while a seven-year-old girl met the same fate in the tribal Mokhada area of Palghar in the same month, reported PTI quoting officials.

Meanwhile as per a report in June, fourteen people died in at least 1,118 cases of snake bites in Maharashtra's Raigad district in the last 17 months, officials said.

In light of the rise in incidents of snake bite, people have been advised to go for immediate medical intervention at the nearest hospital instead of consulting quacks or using traditional remedies, an official from the civil hospital said.

A total of 1,118 cases of snake bite were reported in the district from January 1, 2022 to June 3 this year, and 14 persons have died in these incidents, he said.
