Mumbai: 17-year-old stabs tutor in broad daylight

Raju Thakur, the tutor

A 17-year-old student stabbed his coaching class tutor in broad daylight and later surrendered at the Kashimira police station, the cops said on Thursday. The victim is recuperating at a hospital. The student is believed to have attacked Raju Thakur after being reprimanded for not focusing on his studies, sources said.

According to police, the incident took place at Penkarpada in Mira Road around 1.40 pm on Thursday. Raju, 26, runs Thakur Academy, at Temkararpara in Mira Road East, for students of Stds VIII-XII and also teaches there. The student, now at a correction home, is a Std XII student.

Thakur was standing and talking to some of his students near his academy, when the teenager attacked him with a knife. The victim resisted and other students tried to stop him too, but the boy overpowered Thakur and stabbed him again in the back as well as in his abdomen.

The teenager then fled and people rushed Thakur to Bhaktivedanta hospital. Meanwhile, local residents informed the police who arrived at the spot. Later, the boy surrendered at the Kashimira police station and confessed to stabbing Thakur, cops said. “We have seized the knife used in the assault and the accused has been booked under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code and sent to a correction home,” a senior police officer said.

The police are investigating whether there is a history of conflict between the tutor and the teenager, the officer said, adding that they are also analysing CCTV camera footage of Thakur’s movements leading up to the incident. Thakur’s condition is said to be stable and is currently recuperating at the hospital, the officer said.
