The Borivli police have booked a man and his daughter for allegedly duping a Marathi actor of Rs 10 lakh on the pretext of selling an apartment at Gorai to her. The complainant, Hemlata Bane, has alleged that the accused were tenants, not owners.

In her complaint, Malad resident Bane said she had come in contact with one Bhushan Patil at her local gym. In 2019, Patil told her that his employer Khushbu Gohil, who ran Shukran Travel Agency at Raghuleela Mall in Kandivali, wanted to sell her flat.

Bane then finalised the deal for Rs 35 lakh and she paid a token of Rs 10 lakh as token money. However, despite repeated reminders, the father-daughter duo didn’t show any interest in preparing the sale deed. After they began avoiding her calls, Bane filed a complaint in July 2019. In her complaint, Bane said the accused didn’t show her the original papers of the house on the grounds that it was mortgaged with a bank.

The actor told the police that she made an inquiry on her own and was shocked to find that the father-daughter duo were just tenants at the flat. When she confronted Khushbu about the cheating, she allegedly abused her and gave her a post-dated cheque of Rs 10 lakh. However, the cheque bounced.

Bane alleged that she was walking home on July 22, 2021, when a man on a scooter approached her at Chincholi Bunder road and threatened to kill her if she didn’t take back her complaint. Bane immediately informed the cops. An officer from Borivli police station said they carried out a probe and registered a case against Khushbu and her father on August 5 for cheating. “Further investigations are on,” said the officer, adding that the process got delayed due to the pandemic.

Bane said it was a harrowing experience. “This is a gang that takes advantage of people in a well-organised way. Many others have become victims of their fraud. They took money from me in the name of selling a flat and then said they didn’t know me. I request the Mumbai police to arrest them immediately or else more people may become victims of their fraud,” the actor told mid-day.
