According to police sources, the accused, Kanan Mutthuswami, who works as a labourer at Film City in Goregaon East, wanted to take revenge on his girlfriend’s mother, as she did not approve of their relationship and had got her engaged to someone else. The accused also had an argument with her mother over this.
He kidnapped the infant from the pavement below the Mrunal Gore flyover bridge, smothered the boy to death and dumped his body in a water tank near Bombay Veterinary Hospital in Goregaon East on March 26.
The case
The complainant lives with her four children (two daughters aged 22 and 20 and two sons nine and seven months) on the footpath below the Mrinal Gore flyover bridge, Goregaon East.
“On the day of the incident, her two daughters along with her son-in-law had gone to visit a relative. The complainant was alone with her two sons and was asleep. She woke up at around 3.30 am to go to the bathroom and found the child missing,” an officer said.
The police said that when the boy’s mother could not find him, she approached them and registered the case. “On the complaint of the 40-year-old woman, we registered the case under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code, and started to probe,” said the officer.
Accused was nabbed
The police checked the call data records of the complainant’s family members and found Mutthuswami’s number reflecting several times. “We detained him and last night during interrogation, he confessed to the crime,” said an officer from Vanrai police station.
“We have arrested the accused for murder and he has been produced before the court. He was remanded in police custody till March 30. The body has been recovered from the water tank and after conducting the panchnama, it was sent for the autopsy,” the officer added.
