A man allegedly ended his life by jumping into a lake, a few hours after attacking and killing his 18-year-old girl in the Palghar district.

The body of Prabhakar Waghare (22) was discovered in a lake in the Mokhada area of Palghar district, stated the police official.

Palghar Superintendent of Police, Balasaheb Patil stated that "An accidental death case has been registered, and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination."

Waghare had fled into the jungle after the attack on Archana Udhar, a Class 12 student, who was walking with her classmates from a junior college at around 11 am on Friday.

The assailant, jilted after the girl rejected his advances, slit the girl's throat with a sharp weapon, resulting in her tragic death.

The police official further mentioned, "Waghare's parents had approached the victim's family, seeking a positive response to his proposal, but were unsuccessful. The accused had purportedly planned to kill the girl on her birthday two days prior to the incident."

Meanwhile, a special court in Maharashtra's Thane district sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for raping his minor daughter.

Special judge D S Deshmukh on Friday convicted the 31-year-old accused of charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for raping his daughter who was six years old at the time of the assault.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 9,000 on the accused.

Special public prosecutor Sandhya H Mhatre informed the court that the accused, a resident of Kalwa, raped his daughter on December 2, 2017, and warned her not to tell anyone about the assault.

Based on the complaint by the child's mother, the police registered the offence under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act and arrested the accused.
