A 23-year-old man from Maharashtra's Palghar district has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his former girlfriend, an official said on Thursday, reported the PTI.

According to the PTI, the woman is being treated for the injuries sustained in the attack. The suspect who was identified as Vikas Varma targeted the 22-year-old woman from Nalasopara on Tuesday, nearly two years after she broke up with him due to frequent quarrels and stopped responding to his messages.

The official said Varma, however, continued to pursue the woman. She had even filed a police complaint against him on October 21 last year, he said.

Varma stabbed the woman in the chest and abdomen with a knife around 7.45 am on Tuesday when she was on her way to work. Locals overpowered Varma and handed him over to the police, as per the PTI.

The Achole police have registered a case against Varma under Indian Penal Code section 307 (attempt to murder), the official said.

Meanwhile, in an another incident in Palghar, the Palghar Police have registered a case against a 45-year-old man for allegedly beating up a railway pointsman after a rail crossing gate was closed when he arrived there in Palghar district, an official said on Thursday, reported the PTI.

The incident took place on Tuesday when the 31-year-old victim was on duty at the railway crossing in Boisar area, the official said.

He was closing the gate for an approaching train when the suspect arrived there on a two-wheeler and got agitated at the gate being closed, the official from Government Railway Police (GRP) in Palghar said quoting the victim's complaint, according to the PTI.

The accused then entered the victim's cabin, got into an argument and assaulted the victim, injuring him, the official said.

Based on the complaint, the GRP registered the case on Tuesday against the accused under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, he said.
