Mansi Khandelwal was earlier arrested by Andheri cops for duping a man of Rs 1.25 crore

The Kalyan police have arrested a 38-year-old woman for allegedly duping several people claiming herself to be the owner of a shipyard that she had leased. She is also accused of cheating a few students on the promise of giving them high-paying jobs at the shipyard. The police said the woman, Mansi Khandelwal, already faces five cases of cheating.

The police said Khandelwal, a resident of Khadakpada, had rented a shipyard at Ganesh Ghat, Durgadi, from the Maharashtra Maritime Board. She would persuade people to invest in the business but would not return their money. While she was arrested earlier in a Rs 1.25-crore cheating case, she managed to walk out on bail, they said.

Her arrest on Wednesday came on a complaint by four HSC students. “She took Rs 12 lakh from the students promising them good jobs at the shipyard. But she didn’t give them the jobs. When we went to her home, she and her mother didn’t open the door for two hours. Instead, she kept claiming that she had the backing of an ex-MLA which was untrue,” said inspector Dharmendra Aware of Khadakpada police station.

The policeman said Khandelwal would get big barges and many boats to the shipyard only to impress her victims. “She would promise good returns to businessmen if they invested in the shipyard. She used the same tactics to trap students into giving her money for jobs,” Aware said. Cops have temporarily blocked the operations at the shipyard.

Sub-inspector Digambar Pawar of Andheri police station told mid-day, “Earlier, we had arrested Khandelwal in a cheating case. She had taken nearly Rs 1.25 crore from a businessman to invest into the shipyard business, but never returned the money.” An FIR had also been registered against at Khar police station for cheating. A Kalyan court on Thursday remanded Khandelwal in police custody for two days.
