The development was confirmed by ATS Chief Jai Jeet Singh. According to the ATS, the FIR was registered following a complaint by Vimal Hiren, wife of the deceased.

An ATS source said the post mortem report states in the section of  surface wounds and injuries that they are definitely ante mortem, which means that the injuries were caused before his death. Senior ATS officers, including DIG Shivdeep Lande visited the spot on Monday where Hiren's body was found.

The case was transferred to the Maharashtra ATS after former chief minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, raised several questions about the probe and API Sachin Vaze who was investigating the case. The ATS on Sunday officially took over both the cases - the abandoned car case and Hiren's death case - from Mumbai and Thane police.
