Head constable Roop Chand and constable Ramesh Chand are warded in a private hospital here.

One of them was strangulated with a rope by rioters and his throat slit, while the other had a bullet injury during the Sep 14 violence.

Hundreds of Muslims attacked the Masuri police station after two pages allegedly torn from the Koran were found near a rail track, with a mobile number scribbled on them.

Police said the mob resorted to violence even as some of the community leaders were discussing the issue with the authorities.

The violence left six rioters dead and several policemen injured, two of them seriously.

Till Wednesday evening, however, none of the rioters have been identified and no one has been arrested.

Police say they are clueless about who the rioters were.

District Magistrate Aparna Upadhyay said the administration was more keen to restore normalcy in the region.

"Our first priority is to restore normalcy. It is a sensitive religious matter and we have to tread cautiously. We have to build confidence among the people," she said.

Life is, however, returning to normalcy in the riot-hit areas of Dasna and Masuri, situated along the Delhi-Lucknow highway.

Curfew was relaxed for nine hours Wednesday. But thousands of police and paramilitary forces are deployed.u00a0
