A 23-year-old’s love story came to a Shakespearean end when, like in Romeo and Juliet, his story ended in his ghastly death.
Identified as Gautam Dilip Sonwate (23) alias Ram, a resident of Tadiwala Road in Pune, the youth was mercilessly battered to death by his girlfriend’s brother and friend. The incident came to light when the deceased’s brother Gopal (27) registered a case with the Bund Garden police station against one Aakash Ashok Ovhal (22) and his accomplice Anil Raju Reddy (23) alias Anand.

'Met at massage parlour'
Senior inspector Madan Bhadharpure of Bund Garden police station who is investigating the case said, “Sonwate and Ovhal’s sister Lalita, who lived in the same locality, had been in a relationship for the last two years. The two had met at a local massage parlour, where Sonwate was employed as an acupressure masseur, while Lalita was pursuing her education. The incident took place on Tuesday where the duo called Sonwate to drink. The plan was to take him to an isolated area and dump him near the canal. However, a security guard on patrol foiled that plan and asked them to leave.”
He added, “The trio then made their way on a motorcycle to the Burning Ghat area near Koregaon Park. In a conversation, Ovhal warned Sonwate to end his relationship with his sister, but as he refused to oblige, Ovhal hit Sonwate’s head with a liquor bottle. Later, he slit his throat and also bashed in his face with a stone.”

The officer went on, “After killing him, the duo kept drinking into the early hours of Wednesday and then went on to their workplaces before running away. Constable Sachin Jagtap had got a tip-off on their location and we made the arrest.”
Brother in shock
Still reeling, Gopal, the deceased’s brother said, “This is shocking because my brother and Ovhal were best friends. Whenever Ovhal had any issue, my brother was there to help him out. In fact, this coming Sunday, we were planning on visiting the family with a marriage proposal. I never thought things would escalate to such an extent that they would kill my brother.”
