Pune crime: Youth's body found with 40 stab wounds to face

A partially burnt body with 40 stab wounds to the face, suspected to have been inflicted with a screwdriver, was found in a nullah near Dange chowk on Hinjewadi-Chinchwad road on Saturday morning.

Though the police are yet to ascertain the identity of the deceased, they believe that he was in his mid-20s. They have started scrutinising CCTV camera footage of a nearby hotel to get clues about the assailant's movements in the area.

Police suspect that the killer first murdered the victim and then tried to dispose of the body in the nullah. But with the water level in the nullah low, the killer may have tried to burn the dead body with petrol, they said.

The Hinjewadi police had received a call on Saturday informing them that a woman's body was found near Dange chowk. When the police team rushed to the spot and checked, the body was found to be of a young male.

Police Inspector A T Waghmale, investigating officer in the case, said, "We have informed all police stations and are checking missing person complaints lodged across the city. Our first task is to identify the deceased and locate his relatives."

Head injury
"The autopsy report has revealed that there was a head injury and the face was stabbed at least 40 times with a sharp weapon like a screwdriver.

The way the youth has been killed points to possibility of an illicit affair gone wrong or past rivalry between the deceased and the assailant, " Waghmale said.

"We have got CCTV camera footage from a nearby hotel. We are analysing it to get clues on the movements of the people who carried out this gruesome crime," he added.
