The father, 65 and partially paralysed, ran away from his house to the basement of the next building to hide from his son; he was found a few hours later in an unconscious state
A 40-year-old man allegedly thrashed his partially paralysed father to death, claiming he was fed up of taking care of him. Vishrantwadi police arrested the accused, Yashwant Gaikwad, hours after his father, 65-year-old Chandrakant, was declared dead. A case of murder has been registered against him.
Inspector Sudhakar Kate from Vishrantwadi police station said, “On Monday morning, the accused, under the influence of alcohol, demanded money from his father, saying he wanted to buy medicines for him and groceries for the house.
But Chandrakant said no since his son had already taken Rs 2,000 the night before for the medicines, but had splurged
it on alcohol.
Furious at the rebuff, his son verbally abused him, saying he was fed up of his health issues, and started beating him. He also demanded his share in a property deal, which his father has recently received money from.”
According to cops, none of their neighbours came forward to help the 65-year-old when his son was assaulting him. Chandrakant managed to run away and decided to hide from his son in the basement of the building next door.
Around 11.30 am, a resident from the society found Chandrakant with his clothes torn and in an unconscious state. “He informed us and rushed him to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Doctors found multiple inju-ries on his head and body. The watchman identified him,” added Kate.
Chandrakant had retired from a Pimpri-based company and was receiving monthly pension. His wife had passed away five months ago. Yashwant is a graduate but has been unemployed for some time.
His wife had left him, taking their three kids, and was staying at her maternal home.
“During investigation, one of the neighbours told us that Yashwant had beaten his father. The accused was hiding in a bar in Yerawada when we found him. At the police station, his agitated family members attacked him, and he is currently admitted to Sassoon hospital for treatment,” informed the inspector.
