The incident took place at the couple’s Kamdhenu Society residence in Nigdi. Anita and her husband were alone at the time. u00a0Sources say the couple had had an argument over Anita’s relatives coming to stay with them, and after a verbal spat, she allegedly grabbed the revolver and fired a bullet at herself.

Their nine-year-old daughter and Digambar’s mother had stepped out of home only a few minutes earlier. API Digambar Suryavanshi is attached with the Nigadi police station. Before assuming charge there three months ago, he worked in Gondia district. “No case has been registered in this regard.

Our investigation is still going on,” said senior inspector Nandkumar Bhosale Patil. Denying any previous incident of bickering between the couple, he added, “We have enquired with the neighbours, but no one has said that there were instances of conflict between them.” Talking of Anita’s health, he stated that she was serious but stable.

Dr Subhash Rajule, medical superintendent at Niramaya Hospital, told MiD DAY that the patient’s internal organs were damaged and a surgery had been conducted, adding that the next 72 hours were critical for her.

“It is premature to say whether this was an attempted suicide or accident. We are yet to record API Suryavanshi’s statement. Relatives of the couple have arrived from Beed, and we will be able to comment on the matter after hearing from family members, whether or not the couple had had any clashes in the past,” senior inspector Patil added.u00a0
