A month after the suspicious death of anchor, Arpita Tiwary, 25, the Malvani police on Monday morning arrested her friend, Amit Hazra, who was a suspect in the case, after investigators probed a Facebook chat between the two.
A police officer said, "He was arrested on the basis of circumstantial evidence and a brief interrogation today morning and will be produced in court today."
mid-day had, on December 16, first reported about the suspicious Facebook chats between Arpita and Amit. In the chat, four days before she died, Amit had dared Arpita to meet him on Sunday. The lead fizzled out after cops deemed it "insignificant".
Arpita, a resident of Mira Road, had left home on December 9, around 11 am. She had told her father, Triveninath, that she was going to Essel World for an event. Around 10.45 pm, when he called her, she said she would come home and have dinner. Her family then went to sleep expecting her to return late. She was found dead at her boyfriend Pankaj Jadhav's building Manavsthal in the wee hours of December 10. She had fallen from the 15th floor.

"The cops, while investigating the matter, had learned that Amit was trying to get Arpita's attention. Though he and Pankaj were friends, their friend circle was aware of Arpita and Amit's closeness. Amit knew Arpita wanted to break up with Pankaj as he wasn't keen on marrying her, despite being with her for eight years," sources said.
