A 57-year-old police sub-inspector was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident around 2 am on Saturday. A police sub-inspector (PSI), Virendra Khavale, who was stationed at nakabandi at Kanjurmarg, was knocked down by a speeding car during the wee hours. The mishap resulted in multiple fractures on the left hand of the PSI.

The Parksite cops immediately informed beat marshals at night patrolling and nabbed the driver of the four-wheeler. "The accused has been arrested," the police official said. The driver of the car was identified as Vishal Ghorpade (34), a resident of Hanuman Nagar, Bhandup (West).

The Vikhroli traffic police and Parksite cops had stationed nakabandi on Friday night at various points within its jurisdiction.

The injured police sub-inspector Virendra Khavale (57) was stationed at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Road in front of Huma Mall. Khavale and other constables of Parksite police and traffic cops were checking the vehicles passing through the road.

Around 2 am, a white-coloured Eco car approached the nakabandi from Bhandup. Police constable Sandeep Gaikwad signaled the driver of the car to stop but instead, the driver raced the car and almost tried to knock down the constable. PSI Khavale also tried to stop the car, but the driver didn’t slow down and knocked him down and race away.

Beat Marshal 1 saw the incident and chased the car (MH-03-CB-9300). The information about the incident and the details of the car was shared with the main Control room.

According to the police, the car raced via Gandhi Nagar junction, Bindu Madhav Chowk, Kanjur Marg East, Nahur towards Bhandup. A few minutes later, the main control room was informed by Bhandup cops that the car has been stopped at Ekta Police Chowkie.

Cops at nakabandi reached the spot and identified the car and the driver.

Meanwhile, PSI Khavale was rushed to the nearby private hospital - Fortis Hospital, where it was revealed that his left hand has been fractured with multiple injuries.

“The accused was caught and booked under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder), 333 (voluntarily causes grievous hurt to any person being a public servant in the discharge of his duty). He was taken to hospital where his blood test was done, which confirmed he had consumed alcohol,” said a police official from Parksite police station.
