Introduce your children to the world of shapes and colours with this digital storytelling piece

The colours of life

The video is inspired by the works of Canadian artist Emily Carr

Art, especially the kind that’s hung up in museums, can be a tad cerebral and tedious for young minds. To make the process of discovery more exciting for little minds, ThinkArts, a Kolkata-based non-profit, has created a digital performance video, which is suitable for children of ages four years and above.

The piece, which is inspired by the paintings of Canadian artist Emily Carr, tells the story of two boys, Adi and Rohan, who are eagerly anticipating their visit to the art museum. But once they get there, they realise that all the colours from the paintings have run away. In tracking down these errant colours, the children uncover the wondrous world of colours, shapes and art.

The piece has been written and directed by CG Salamander, a writer and comic journalist based in Chennai, who has published several children’s books and comics, and features storytelling by playwright Kavya Srinivasan. The makers share that it was commissioned by the Vancouver International Children’s Festival for their online edition in 2021.
