Inspired by the backless triangular top trend of the ’90s and made famous by American model Kendall Jenner, strappy napkin tops are all the rage in 2021. We invited a stylist to share tips on pulling them off smartly.

nAs we find ourselves in familiar times again, fashion continues to push limits. Just when you think you’ve seen it all — be it above-the-keyboard dressing or couture face coverings — there’s always something else to discover. Right now, the napkin top is a hot favourite among fashionistas. On Instagram, it is easy to spot thrift stores and small businesses selling the risky garment — the construction of which basically entails a piece of fabric on the chest area, supported by multiple noodle straps at the back.

In 2016, Kendall Jenner sporting a gold backless dress tucked into skinny jeans generated enough buzz for the Internet to christen the style a ‘napkin top.’ Celebrity stylist Sabina Halder points out that the napkin top has its origins in the ’90s trend of triangular, backless tops and even, those made out of bandanas — JLo’s 1998 VMA look is a classic example. “Now, because of Instagram and YouTube, we’re seeing the napkin top turn into a DIY project. It’s gained a lot of popularity during the summertime, especially because it’s a reflection of where we are right now. Even if you don’t want to buy it, it’s something you can easily make and wear around your house,” she says.

Customise it to your fit: While you may find options at fast fashion labels, it is important to assess your comfort level while picking a napkin top since it does require you to show skin. But as the style itself is versatile, Halder says it makes sense to have it custom-made according to the coverage you want.
This kind of top, she states, will never give you a fitting issue if you have factored in the right bust measurements and cup size. “It can be made in both cropped and non-cropped versions. You also need to keep in mind the wearability of the piece, which is where your choice of fabric matters; a crochet piece may only be suitable for beachwear, while a cotton one may be suitable for brunch. A satin version, on the other hand, will be more sophisticated and dress-y,” she adds.
Front factor: Halder asserts that this style is suitable for all bust sizes. She emphasises choosing inner wear that complements the fabric of the top. “If the fabric is sheer, opt for silicone pasties, or if you have a fabric that clings to your body, it’s best to go with boob tape,” she suggests.
Style for the occasion: Halder recommends pairing a satin napkin top with ripped denims and heels for a (virtual) club night. For a romantic dinner, replace the jeans with structured trousers. Need some down time? Wear a linen napkin top with wide-legged linen pants. If you don’t want to show skin, you can wear the top over an oversized shirt, and layer with a jacket. “The only no-no is pairing this with skimpy bottoms,” she states.
