Very few artistes embrace the art of covering songs with as much grace as Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power. She sings them in a manner which embraces the original artiste with an individuality that often makes her version unique. In her third collection of covers, Cat Power Covers, Marshall takes us through a gamut of artistes and their popular works.

The album will see versions of songs by Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Frank Ocean, Billie Holiday and others. Often, her version has an unfamiliar sound from the original, as in the case of A pair of brown eyes by The Pogues that has turned into a hymn. The Replacements’ Here comes the regular has reinvented itself in a piano-driven melody thanks to Marshall.

The bold decision to cover Jackson Browne’s These days shows her conviction to approach delicate lyricism with a sublime sound. She also tweaks the course of a Frank Ocean song, Bad religion, while opening the album. And with Eddie Heywood’s I’ll be seeing you, there’s a toned-down rendition of a classic.

The past few years have been one of survival, and this album is a reflection of the sentiment. The songs in this 12-track, 45-minute joyride showcase her unique vocal sensibilities and understanding of lyrics and tune across genres. It’s safe to say we’ll be seeing more of Powers in the years to come.
