Science is the way

With the idea of bringing art and science together, a group of scientists and engineers founded STEAM Academy, a platform that focuses on imparting scientific and technological knowledge to kids in an artistic manner. STEAM signifies Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. “Art is like Araldite. It binds everything. If you look at history, good scientists have also been good artists,” says Dr AP Jayaraman, President of STEAM Academy.

Dr Jayaraman will be organising a workshop on climate change in collaboration with Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum. The session has been themed on Earth Day, which was observed recently. Using both fact and fiction, the academic will inform young participants about the fundamental distinction between weather and climate, about climate change and its consequences while discussing the measures to reduce it.

“The simplest way to create a science story is to turn it into an autobiography. If we use a first person narrative in stories to explain a technological aspect to kids, it creates a better avenue for them to understand the concept, which is called creative science literature,” explains Dr Jayaraman. There is no one-size-fits-all formula in storytelling. If kept factually correct, it is highly flexible for the creator, he adds, sharing that Professor S Sivadas, a creative science literature author who has written nearly 300 science books for children, devised this concept. “Every tiny object has a story to tell. It all depends on how you look at it,” he signs off.
