As much as all the joy and fun that pets bring with them, if you are a new pet parent, taking care of the furry friends can become a bit overwhelming, especially during the rains. Dr Ramani Jairam of Pluto Pet Clinic, shares all you need to know about taking care of furry friends in the rains.

Wear it right

If you plan to take your pets out in the rain, there are two things that you need to make them wear — raincoats and rainy shoes. Buy raincoats that have hoods, as covering their head is necessary to protect them from infections. Good rubber-based rain shoes are available in several stores and most pets don’t face any problems wearing them.

Clean ‘em up!

The paws of the dog must be washed thoroughly with a mild soap solution after the walk in the rain. Also dry up their ears to avoid any sort of infection.

Dry towels

While cats in general stay indoors during rains, dogs require some outdoor time. So if you plan to walk them, it’s best to take them out when it’s not raining heavily. How soon you dry your pet after they get drenched in the rainwater, is important. Hence, a good supply of dry towels should be kept handy as drying them up thoroughly is absolutely essential.

Parasites

Regular deworming must be carried out during this season as it is essential to eliminate internal parasites in young puppies and new dogs being brought into a household. Apart from this, regular control of external parasites should be taken up in consultation with your regular veterinarian.

Groom them

Pets tend to get ticks and fleas in this season and so being vigil about this is necessary. Regularly check their fur and remove any such pests.

H2O

Pets are susceptible to water borne diseases, so they should be given only boiled water to drink in this season.
