American politics recently took an interesting sartorial turn when US president, 78-year-old Joe Biden made headlines for wearing a quirky pair of dog-printed socks. That he is a pet parent to German Shepherds, Champ and Major, might have possibly had something to do with his choice.

Mumbai-based communications professional Lysander Fernandes, 36, who often pairs his formal clothes with patterned socks, says that they make for interesting conversation-starters, and are a subtle way to let your personality shine through even in starchy corporate settings.

The right pair
“When picking quirky socks, I gravitate towards a design that has one element in common with the rest of my outfit’s colour scheme. I also enjoy wearing stripes, polka dots, and geometric patterns. I do not wear very outlandish prints or cartoon themes to work,” suggests 38-year-old real estate professional Venkat Narayan. It’s also important to not go overboard with too many quirky accessories. Let your socks be the focal point of your outfit, Fernandes elaborates.

Pair them right
Image consultant Greeshma Thampi emphasises on selecting the right trouser length — the trouser break should fall on the mouth of your shoe so that the socks are visible when you sit and not while you are standing. Accordingly, avoid fits that taper at the ankle. If you are wearing patterned trousers, choose solid-coloured socks instead of quirky prints.
