It’s impossible to escape the reach of the glazed make-up trend. Here’s how to make your make-up last, in Mumbai’s muggy monsoon

Hailey Bieber has recently made headlines for three reasons — selling her beauty brand for a jaw-dropping $(US) 1 billion, the longevity of her marriage and her fascination with the glazed beauty look. The aesthetic, which shows no signs of going out of vogue, is so named because it mimics the almost reflective radiance of a glazed donut. The focus, of course, is on healthy, hydrated skin that stops just shy of being shimmery, but harkens back to summer, youth and all-things luminous.
“The trend involves using products that deliver an amped up version of the dewy look, a stark contrast to the matte-everything trend from a few years ago,” explains celebrity make-up artist Drishya Bhagyanath. She lays down a simple roadmap to getting it right.
Creme de la creme
Skin prep is an important step in the glazed routine. “Hydrated skin is the key to achieving this look. Start with a hydrating toner followed by a hydrating serum. Opt for dewy foundations or tinted moisturisers, over matte foundations,” Bhagyanath says. Next, switch your powder blushes with cream variants. Use cream eye shadows and sticks for your eyes, instead of powders. Highlighter is an essential part of this routine, but must be chosen with care. You’re better off choosing highlighters that offer a subtle, radiant glow instead of chunky, shiny glitter.

“Jelly tints can double up as blushes and lipstick. Follow it up with a gloss for an even juicier look. Set everything in place with a dewy setting spray,” she suggests. Placement is especially important — the highest points of your face should be the glossiest while the rest of your face, including your T-Zone can have a light sheen.
Handle with care
Regardless of how inclusive it seems, Bhagyanath warns that the aesthetic isn’t for everyone. “While this look can make your skin feel radiant and give a youthful appearance, it might not suit someone with oily skin. Overly dewy skin finishes can enhance imperfections and pores. With the weather being humid and hot in Mumbai, especially during the monsoon, this is a slightly tricky look to pull off. Chances are, it will work only if you spend most of your days indoors, in air-conditioned environments,” she notes.

If you are still keen to try the look for yourself, she recommends picking and choosing elements that work well with your daily routine. “If you are in a very professional setting, you can skip using a glossy eye shadow, or a heavy blush. A cleaner look with mascara and hydrating lip balm can look just as fresh. Keep your base lightweight so you don’t sweat it all off. And don’t neglect your skincare routine — given that this look steers clear of full coverage products and uses a lot of glossy textures, it’s essential to start with a clear, smooth canvas. Make sure to blot your face regularly with blotting sheets or tissues to prevent it from seeming too oily, especially as the make-up wears through the day. If the glazed look is too unmanageable, you could tone it down to the butter version, which swaps glossy with satin finishes and slightly blurred finish, which is kinder to skin imperfections,” she signs off.
